Hubei Province, abbreviated as Er, is located in central China, with Wuhan city as its capital. Here you can find The Three Gorges key water control project on Yangtze River, the biggest dam in the world; Chime Bells of Yi, marquis in Zeng Kingdom, the first music instrument of its kind, which is also the eighth wonder of the world; Tonglushan Mine in Daye City, the biggest and the most advanced copper mine of ancient times ever found in the world up till now; and Chajing, the earliest book specialized on tea. Hubei used to be the territory of Chu Kingdom and was the cradle of the ancient Chu Culture. Within this area are the relics of Yingdu, the largest capital of Chu Kingdom and the relics of Chu palace. Also there is large amount of exquisite silk found in Mashan Chu Tumulus called Silk Repertory in Jianglin. This splendid treasure shows the high technology as well as special charm of Chu Culture. Chu was an ancient kingdom which existed the largest in the history of the Chinese nation. Lisao, written by Qu Yuan, Senior Officer of Chu, was the peak of poetic perfection through ages. And songs like Yangchun, Baixue, Xiali and Baren, which are familiar to the public, were also famous songs of Chu Kingdom at that time.
Early in the Northern Song Dynasty, this area got the name of Hubei (Chinese meaning is the north of a lake) because it was located on the north of Dongting Lake. A road was opened from the north of Dongting Lake to Jingshan Mountain, with Yuanshui River and Fengshui River on the west. And this road was thus named Hubei Road. In 1776, the name of this area, Hubei, was for the first time fixed and was ever used up till now. since the western part of Hubei is Erxi Mountain District, which is made up of Bashan Mountain, Wu Mountain, and Wudang Mountain, on May 20th, 1949, Er became the abbreviation of Hubei Province.
Hubei is a province with multiple ethnic groups such as Han, Tujia, Miao, Hui, Dong, Man, Zhuang, Mongolia etc., and the total number of which is 50. And it has a population of 60, 2782 million, with an area of 185,900 square kilometers, within which there are 1,193 rivers of various sizes. On the plains scoured out by the Yangtze River and Hanshui River scatter many lakes of different sizes, which altogether form Jianghan Lake Range, one of the most well-known distinct of freshwater in China. So it is entitled as a province with thousands of lakes, of which consists its unique landscape.
Hubei has a subtropical monsoon climate, with abundant sunshine and heat resources as well as enough rainfalls; besides, it has an annual temperature of 15-17℃, and enjoys long frost free period. In the mid-south lies the Jianghan Plain which is an alluvial plain with the flowing of both Yangze River and its largest branch Hanjiang River. This plain runs an average of 50 meters above the sea level. Since featured in flatness of the topography and fertility of the land, it is well recognized as land with and rice.
Hubei,covering a total area of 281,110 million Chinese acres, enjoys a variety of land resources, with its mountainous areas account for 70%,water areas of 10% and land areas almost 20%.With such advantages, there are over 700 species of animals, which accounts for one-fourth of China’s species of animals. More than 50 species are rare animals under the state regulations, including Yangtze River Dolphin, Golden Monkey, Giant Salamander, Civet Cats etc., and among those, Golden Monkey, which can only be found in China, is second to the national treasure, panda. Another important place in Hubei Province is Shennongjia, the largest virgin forest in the northwest of Hubei, has been regarded as the sea of forest in central China and the natural garden of vegetation and wild animals. It is the transitional area from subtropical to tropical area, and enjoys affluent botanies resources as it’s thickly covered with forest. With an area of 3,250square kilometers, it's the only green land of the same latitude, and it is more distinguished for its variety of species in the world than the ecological system in the temperate zone. There is a story about the origin of the name, Shennong. It is widely said that in the ancient time, Shennong, the Yan Emperor went to mountains and tasted almost all the medicinal herbs in an attempt to find ways to cure people with disease. But since the mou7ntains were steep and hard to climb, he made wood ladders himself .Finally he managed to pluck the herbs on the cliff to cure the patients. Thus he got the name Shennong. Of all the mountains, the average height is 1,700 meters above the sea level. The highest mountain, shennongding is as high as 3105.4 meters and the lowest is 398 meters. Since there are 6 mountains more than 3,000meters high, Shennongjia gains the reputation as the roof of the central China. Besides, it’s famous for the puzzle of shennongjia savage, as well as the species like Pseudolarix kaempferi (indl.) Gord, Davidia involucrata Baillon, living fossil—Metasequoia, with a view to this, the UNECO accepted Shennongjia in Human and Biological Circle Plan.
